Zhukovsky International Airport Is First in Russia to Test Autonomous Transport for Ground Operations
A universal autonomous cargo platform that automates ground logistics has successfully completed a three-month trial at Zhukovsky International Airport, near Moscow. The project was implemented by the Airport together with Russia’s leading developer of autonomous transport, Evocargo, with consulting support from experts of Aerodinamika Airport Holding.
The trials confirmed suitability of the platform for operation in an airport environment. Evocargo’s autonomous vehicles are designed to automate logistics in the airport’s ramp zone, including the transportation of cargo between aircraft and airport terminals.

The technology is powered by artificial intelligence, computer vision, and a multi-sensor perception system. These solutions enable the vehicles to navigate autonomously within operational environments, detect obstacles, and perform logistics tasks without a human driver.

The tests focused on performance of the new platform under high-stress conditions at the airport, including round-the-clock activity, peak workload periods, intensive ramp traffic, and severe winter weather. The results showed that the autonomous platform can perform its tasks efficiently in such conditions.

Over the course of the trials, the platform operated for 368 hours, completed 150 test routes, covered 225 kilometers, and was tested in temperatures ranging from -26°C to +31°C. The project has significant practical value for the advancement of autonomous logistics in the airport industry. In the future, the implementation of such solutions is expected to improve the reliability and predictability of ground operations, ensure continuity during periods of high cargo traffic, and reduce cargo-handling operating costs by 20–35%.

Specialists have prepared recommendations for further improvement of the platform based on results of the trials. These improvements will be incorporated into the next stage of the project as the technology moves toward large-scale implementation.
For Zhukovsky Airport, this project is important not only as a technological experiment but also as a practical step toward a new model of ground logistics. The ramp is a complex operational environment with stringent requirements for safety, precision, and continuity of processes. The trials confirmed the potential of autonomous platforms for integration with airport operations. Together with our partners, we have identified areas for further development that will bring ground process automation to a new level.
