SPAR adopts AI-driven transport
SPAR Middle Volga Ltd, operator of 200 SPAR food supermarkets in Russia, has launched driverless vehicle logistics at its warehouse complex in the town of Dzerzhinsk, east of Moscow.
The high-tech solution provides non-stop transport of goods by autonomous trucks between warehouse facilities at the Dzerzhinsk site. It will allow SPAR to reduce reliance on qualified staff, lower vehicle fleet maintenance costs and optimize logistics. The solution will reduce CO₂ emissions by 3.2 tonnes per year.

Evocargo’s N1 trucks are equipped with artificial intelligence systems, high-precision sensors and machine vision technology, enabling them to move safely and efficiently around the warehouse territory, avoiding obstacles and adjusting the route in real time. The trucks are designed by Evocargo from scratch, rather than being a modification of traditional vehicles with autopilot equipment installed. The trucks provide on-site transport that is maximally cost-effective for the customer.

The service is provided under the “Robots-as-a-Service” business model, using a month-by-month contract that avoids capex outlay for customer. Evocargo is the only autonomous logistics company in Russia that provides such a service.
At SPAR we believe it is important to reduce our environmental impact and promote responsible consumption. We are launching a range of initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint and the use of autonomous electric trucks is a prime example of our strategy. As well as helping the environment, the solution helps us to improve the reliability and transparency of our supply chain.
Elena Kulpina
Customer Experience Director at SPAR Middle Volga
The launch of autonomous vehicles at the SPAR warehouse site will optimise resource use and improve overall productivity. Autonomous technologies reduce risks associated with human error and make work processes more reliable. In addition, the use of high-tech solutions significantly cuts the cost of moving goods and increases transparency and control. We are confident that our co-operation with SPAR will make a significant contribution to the ESG agenda, as well as bringing logistics to a qualitatively new level.
