Robots in sport: Sportmaster introduces driverless trucks in logistics
The omnichannel sports goods retailer, Sportmaster, has begun operation of driverless robotic trucks at one of its distribution centers in Balashikha district, just outside Moscow. The project, implemented in partnership with the autonomous logistics service provider Evocargo, aims to boost operational efficiency while reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Evocargo’s N1 autonomous electric trucks, which have entered service for Sportmaster, run on battery power and can be charged from a standard outlet. They operate using three main systems: perception, navigation, and decision-making. The trucks use lidars, sonars, and cameras to “see” the surrounding environment. They rely on lidar-based maps, GNSS satellite navigation, and wheel encoders for spatial orientation. All of the truck’s sensor data is processed by a unified computing unit, which analyzes the information and coordinates the vehicle’s movement in real time, reacting immediately to changes in the environment.

The truck’s body can be customized to meet client needs—the platform height was adjusted specifically for Sportmaster.

Sportmaster intends to expand its logistics network and scale up its autonomous fleet by the end of 2025.
“Our company is implementing an omnichannel strategy through development of a digital sports platform (a website and mobile app with a wide range of products and health-oriented services). But we are also keen to install innovative technologies throughout our business processes, including logistics. Such solutions increase operational efficiency and enable us to deliver our products to the customer more quickly, true to our mission of making sports accessible to people across Russia”
Alexey Prokhorov
Regional Operations Director in Sportmaster’s Logistics Management section
“Russia’s sports retail leader has chosen to work with the national leader in autonomous ground freight transportation, understanding that business success depends on economic efficiency and sustainable results. Our autonomous logistics service reduces operating costs, optimizes transportation schedules, and addresses the shortage of human drivers across Russia. All of our partners obtain measurable economic benefits from our service, with the flexibility to scale volumes as needed”
