Evocargo brings autonomous vehicles to Severstal-metiz plant
The Russian ferrous-metals giant, Severstal-metiz Group, has tested an autonomous vehicle (AV) solution at its Cherepovets facility, north of Moscow. In the future, four internal transport routes at the plant with a total length of 8 kilometres will be served by driverless trucks.
While many market players are still working on prototypes of unmanned trucks, Evocargo is already deploying driverless trucks in real-world conditions, scaling its service and moving towards fully autonomous logistics.

Severstal-metiz plans to deploy the Evocargo N1, which is the fifth-generation AV from Evocargo, built without driver's cabin, steering wheel or pedals. The robotic platform functions using a complex multi-sensor perception system based on modern machine learning algorithms. Artificial intelligence technologies, computer vision and a range of sensors give the vehicle a 360° field of vision, so that it can react to obstacles three times faster than a human driver. At Severstal-metiz, Evocargo trucks are being tested for in-plant movements of various cargoes: materials, containers, packaging and lubricants.
The introduction of autonomous transport is in line with the company's strategy focused on digitalization and automation in order to reduce operating and finished-product costs, while improving safety and productivity. Severstal-metiz is testing various modern solutions for robotization of production and logistics processes, selecting the most efficient for subsequent implementation and replication.
Oleg Golyakov
Head of Digital Development at Severstal-metiz
We are pleased to be working with Severstal-metiz and we believe that this project is an important step towards large-scale application of autonomous technologies in logistics processes at major industrial enterprises. Process safety and productivity gains are particularly important in the metals industry, and autonomous logistics makes operational processes more coherent, transparent and predictable. Key advantages of the Evocargo solution are reduction of downtime, fleet and personnel costs, boosting overall economic efficiency.
